Meet the Beetles

Every vehicle here is a return - to its era, to its aura, to the mechanical artistry that brought it back to life.

1974

Apollo

History

The open-top (Cabriolet) version of the Beetle had already been manufactured since 1949 by the Karmann factory. The most modern and last version of the open Beetle was the 1303 model, which featured McPherson front suspension and IRS at the rear. Production of the open Beetles stopped permanently in 1979, by which time fuel-injected engines combined with catalytic converters had already started being used. The only available engine for the open Beetles was the T1 with 1,584 cc.

The front suspension was replaced with McPherson struts, and the rear suspension was upgraded to IRS.

Combined with the longer hood, the front luggage compartment was enlarged. The rear suspension significantly improved the Beetle’s handling, though it was considerably more expensive to manufacture. The spare wheel was now stored upright, low in the front luggage compartment.
